Question Description

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.

Assumptions are requirements that need to be met in order for a t-test to be completed. There are three types of assumptions, normality, random sample, and the need for independence of observations. These assumptions are also based on robustness which can be violated, for example, robust means the assumption can be violated but the t-test can still be completed. Whereas, non-robust means that if the assumption is violated, the t-test will not be completed, therefore, the assumption must be met (Corty, 2016).

The normality is an important aspect of assumptions for the t-test, the normality states that the dependent variable reaction time is normally distributed in the population. This type of assumption robustness is deemed robust to violation, but the analysis can be completed if the sample size is larger than 30. For example, in order to check the normality, a histogram with a large sample size can be examined to see if it appears as normally distributed (Corty, 2016).

Another assumption for a t-test is the sample need to be randomly selected from the population. This type of robustness is deemed robust if violated, but the analysis can still be completed. For example, if a researcher selected random depressed adults from a population in Texas to study, in order to use this data as a generalized data, it will need to be only for the state of Texas (Corty, 2016).

Lastly, another assumption for a t-test is the independence of observations, which means cases within the samples do not influence each other. This type of robustness is not robust to violation; therefore, the analysis will not be completed (no t-test will be done). For example, when the researcher is selecting his depressed adults from Texas, each random sample must be used once, and their results and reaction time should not be influenced by another participant. This will produce an assumption that is not robust to violation. However, a violated assumption would be, if the randomly selected participants’ reaction time and analysis influenced each other’s’ results (Corty, 2016).
