Question Description

TEXTBOOK:

Fuller, T. P. (2015). Essentials of industrial hygiene. Itasca, IL: National Safety Council.

You have completed an analysis of the data from the sampling, you need to understand how the results can be used to evaluate risk. The most common method is to compare the results to some existing occupational exposure limit (OEL).

The most commonly used OEL is the permissible exposure limit (PEL) established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). These are the only OELs that are legally enforceable.

The reading in the text this week is from Chapter 5. The study guide also contains two articles and a connection to a web site that you must read. In these readings you will see that there are some concerns with some of the older PELs and that there are other organizations that publish OELs that are based on more recent research and tend to be more conservative than the PELs.

There are two parts to the assignment this week, but you combine the two parts into one submittal. First, you will take the results from the calculations you made last week in unit IV and compare them to some OEL. For this part you get to choose whether you use an OSHA PEL or another OEL, Please explain why you chose the OEL.

Remember to give an opinion as to whether the risk associated with the exposure is acceptable or not.

In the second part take some noise exposure data that are provided and compare the results to the OSHA PEL and action level. This will require performing some more math calculations. You will also have to provide an opinion about the acceptability of risk associated with the noise exposures.

Instructions

This assignment has two parts. Both parts will be combined and submitted within the same document. For this assignment, begin by analyzing the items in the table below and then answering the associated questions.

Hazard

Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL)s

Manganese Fume

5 mg/m3 (OSHA Ceiling )
0.1 mg/m3 (ACGIH 8-hour TWA (I))

Copper Fume

0.1 mg/m3 (OSHA 8-hour TWA)
0.2 mg/m3 (ACGIH 8-hour TWA)

Lead Fume

0.05 mg/m3 (OSHA 8-hour TWA)
0.05 mg/m3 (ACGIH 8-hour TWA

1,2,4 trimethylbenzene

OSHA – None Established
25 ppm (ACGIH 8-hour TWA TLV)

Toluene

200 ppm (OSHA 8-hour TWA)
300 ppm (OSHA Ceiling)
20 ppm (ACGIH 8-hour TWA TLV)

Xylene

100 ppm (OSHA 8-hour TWA)
100 ppm (ACGIH 8-hour TWA

Metal Working Fluids

OSHA – None Established
0.5 mg/m3 (NIOSH 10-hour TWA REL)

Part I: For each of the chemical hazards answer the following:

§Compare your calculated exposures in Unit IV to one of the occupational exposure limits (OELs) in the table.

§Does the calculated exposure exceed the OEL you chose?

§Discuss why you chose the OELs you used.

§Provide your opinion as to whether the risk associated with each exposure is an acceptable level of risk.

Part II: Analyze the table below, and then answer the associated questions.
