Essay Prompt.
McConigal discusses how reality is broken, Dominguez suggests that immigrants in “their new reality” (Links to an external site.) make changes to their language, and Fillmore (Links to an external site.) argues that educators need to help immigrants preserve their ethnicities through “community action”. Read all these sources to find how you can connect with them to respond to the following assignment:
Over the past semester, you have focused on learning academic language, in particular how to write an academic essay. Write an essay about what part of your language you plan to preserve. What is so important to you that you will never give up? Think of words, phrases, stories, poems in your first or second language. How do they relate to your current reality and how do you plan to make them a part of your reality in the future?
Essay requirements: In response to the prompt, write a five-paragraph essay with MLA format and connect with at least two of the following: McGonigal, Fillmore (Links to an external site.), Lahiri (Links to an external site.), or Hardach (Links to an external site.).
