Question Description

Portfolio Blog ESL 106

A portfolio is a collection of writings that a student composes that demonstrates a writer’s development over a semester.

A blog is an internet page. It is a combination of two words: “web”and “log”. It is something that can be updated and shared with others.

For this assignment, you will create a blog, or more generally a website, to publish some of your writing.

Why are we doing an online portfolio?

This assignment gives you the opportunity to publish some of your writing and to demonstrate what you have learned about writing in various genres: an expository essay (language acquisition), a blog (giving advice on language), academic IMRD research article (student services), and a student newspaper article (student services), and a profile (About Me). Depending on your background, it may also give you the opportunity to learn about creating and using a website.

Directions:
1. Choose a website platform. This can be Blogger, which we will look at in class or another

one that you are already familiar with or want to learn.
2. Develop an About Me page. You will write and post a profile here. Follow one of the

examples that we examine. Include the name of the college and link to its home page.. You can omit your nameif you would like. This needs to be a separate page.

3. Create a. b. c. d. e.

one blog entry for the following:
Language Acquisition – Expository Language advice – Blog
Student Services – IMRD Research essay Student Services- student newspaper article Final project

4. Design the website as creatively as you want. You can use your pictures, or pictures and other images from the internet. But be very careful to avoid plagiarism.

5. Follow the directions for each assignment.
6. Post everything below to your website before 1:00 p.m. on May 27, 2020. 7. Send the link for your website to Canvas so that I can view it.

How will you be graded?

Rubric
40 points – Completeness(no assignments will be re-graded) – If you include the final

draft of each of your four major writing assignments, you will get 40 out of

100 points.
10 points – About me– This will be graded for language and mechanics appropriate for

the About Me genre and audience. Your content successfully addresses your purpose. You include a link to Grossmont College’s website. Grammar and mechanics errors that are distracting may adversely affect your grade.

40 points – Final Project– This will be graded for language and mechanics appropriate to the assigned genre and audience, content that successfully addresses your purpose for writing in a way that your audience will understand, and organization and format that follows the genre that you were assigned to use for your reflection. Grammar and mechanics errors that are distracting may adversely affect your grade.

10 points – Format and Presentation– Your portfolio is easy to navigate, visually appealing, and appropriate for educational purposes.

100 points total = 10% of your final grade.

Note: No assignments will be re-graded, but you should fix your grammar, etc. as it will be public.

Note: This is stated in different ways in different parts above. However, I want to be clear. You can publish this anonymouslyif you need to or want to. You do not need to publish your name on any of your writings, and you do not need to use your name on your About Me page. You can create a pseudonymif you want. Or you can use only your first name. Or you can just use pronouns – I, me, my.

When you upload the link for your site to Canvas, I will know whose site it is, but no one else will.
You are also not required to publish any photographsof yourself.

If you are uncomfortable with anything being too personal for you, please talk to meand we will work it out.

However, you are free to use your name and pictures on your site if you are comfortable with that.

ESL 106 – Final Project

–Option #1– Semester Reflection

Genre: This assignment will be written as a blog. You will post on your ESL 106 portfolio.

Audience: Your Semester Reflection will be read by future students in ESL 106. You are writing for incoming ESL 106 students. You may use a pseudonym if you don’t want to use your real name.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is two-fold. First, this assignment requires you to reflect on the writing assignments that you have completed this semester and what you have learned, and still need to learn, regarding writing in various genres of English. Secondly, you must explain to incoming 106 students what they will learn, how to learn, and what to avoid.

Prompt: Write a blog post to inform future ESL 106 students how to prepare for 106.
Consider what you knew about writing in English at the beginning of the semester, what you’ve

studied, and what you know now. Are you ready for ESL 119?

Justify your answer by providing specific examples of what you did not know before this class and what you know now. You may focus on grammar, reading, writing, and/or an awareness of genre knowledge. You must provide a specific example from earlier in the semester and show how you have improved or learned something.

If you think that you knew everything before this class and have therefore wasted your time here, please justify that. In other words, demonstrate with concrete examples that you knew everything at the beginning of the semester.

Finally, give adviceto incoming ESL 106 students about what they should be aware of and/or prepare for during their semester.

Length: Your blog post will probably need to be between 550 and 800 words to accomplish all the tasks above.

Due: It is due at the same day and time as your portfolio, May 27, 2020 at 1:00 p.m.

Grading: Your grade for this assignment will count for 40 points out of 100 portfolio points. It will be graded for language and mechanics appropriate to the assigned genre and audience, content that successfully addresses your purpose for writing in a way that your audience will understand, and organization and format that follows the genre that you were assigned to use for your reflection.

–Option #2– Scholarship Application

Genre: This assignment will be written as a scholarship essay. You do not need to post this on your ESL 106 portfolio if it is too personal. However, if you don’t, you will need to give me a paper copy or you can email it to me, but I need a copy to read. You also need to write a brief summary that explains the process of how you applied, and post it as a reflection on your portfolio.

Audience:The scholarship committee Purpose: To obtain a scholarship

Prompt: Go to Grossmont College’s scholarship page before the deadline and select at least one scholarship to apply for. You can at least apply for the Grossmont College general scholarship. First, complete the application. Second, write the essay that is required and follow the directions for it. Then, submit your application and essay to Financial Aid following the directions online before the deadline. Finally, post your essay on your portfolio, or give it to me on paper or email. You don’t need to post it online if it’s too personal.

Length: Follow the requirements on the scholarship directions. For your summary, write about 200 words or so to explain the process that you went through to apply for the scholarship.

Due: Each scholarship has its own deadline; be sure to submit it to financial aid by their deadline. The copy for me is due at the same day and time as your portfolio, May 27, 2020 at 1:00 p.m.

–Option #3– Grossmont College Community

Genre: Summaries / Reflections Audience: Your teacher and classmates

Purpose: To describe four campus events that you participated in and what your experience was like

Why?
Studies show that students who are more involved in their college campus life are more likely to succeed in college. Spending all your time on campus focused on school work and ignoring everything else that goes on at the college happens a lot. This assignment is designed to get you more involved in the activities at Grossmont College so that you learn more about the college and its diverse campus, and perhaps help you find new and exciting activities that you didn’t know about. It also helps give you something to discuss on scholarship applications and university applications.

What?
This semester, you are required to do a final project. One option is to attend and/or participate in at least four campus eventsand write a brief reflection for each. Your reflection will discuss (1) when you attended (date and time), (2) where it was, (3) what it was, and (4) what you learned and/or whether you enjoyed it and why, (5) maybe post a picture. Your reflections will be included in your portfolio. An example is posted at the end of this form. You can do one separate post for each one, or you can do one long one with all four.

When?
Any time before the end of the semester. Your portfolio is due on the last day of class, May 27, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. You will need to attend all of the events before that time and write a brief reflection for each.

How?
Choose four events, go, take a picture if you want to post it to your portfolio (not required), write a brief reflection, and add it to your portfolio. That’s it.

Suggestions:

Here are somepossibleevents that you may attend for this assignment. However, you are not limited to these. Any event that is run by Grossmont College will work. If you’re not sure, you can ask me.
Note: These activities can occur on any day or time, including the weekend; some are free and some cost money. Choose activities that interest you, are in your budget, and fit your schedule.

Basketball Game

On Thursday, January 30 at 2:00 p.m., I attended the women’s basketball game against College of the Siskiyous in the gym at Grossmont College.

I have watched some basketball games on TV before, but I have never attended a game before. In fact, this is the first college sporting event that I have ever attended. It was exciting. Everyone was screaming and getting very involved in the game, even though they were just watching. I would definitely like to see another game.
