How Personal Are Your Relationships?

Complete the “How Personal Are Your Relationships” Questions. For the purposes of this exercise, be sure to list several people who are close to you.

Make a list of several people who are close to you (e.g. family members, people you live with, friends, coworkers, and so on)
Use a scale (from 1-5) that follow to rate each relationship.
Consider comparing your results with your classmates or friends.

After completing the questions, ask yourself the important question: How satisfied are you with the answers you found?

1. Make a list of several people who are close to you: My husband, my friend Rasha, my friend Zara, my friend Tatevik, and my dad.

Written Portion: Overall I am satisfied with the answers I found after rating each person that I chose on the scale because I feel that it is an accurate reality of the type of relationship I have with each person that I listed. The only thing that surprised me and made me a little sad was in the case of my husband. I realized that in the “Uniqueness” part, I put a 4, when I really wanted to put a 5, and also in the “Disclosure” part I also put a 4, when I feel that I should have put a 5. Also interesting was to see how my dad hit high marks in each category, when before, let us say in my teens and twenty’s, I would have put lower scores.

1) 1. What are the unique qualities of your relationships? The unique qualities of my relationships with the people that I listed are that I share interpersonal relationships with each of them. There is not one person that I listed that I do not have a unique bond with. They are also people that I would not want to replace, share some form of dependency, disclose information that I would not to others, and I have a rewarding relationship with each of them. I think this is unique because this also brings a “qualitative” aspect into the relationships.

2.How irreplaceable are your relationships? I would say the 5 people I listed are the only ones that in which if for any reason they were no longer in my life, I would not be able to replace them. My father for very obvious reasons is 100% irreplaceable, and my husband as well. Even though a spouse may die, or the marriage may end for various reasons, the relationship you have with one spouse will never be the same as if the one you might have with a new spouse. As is mentioned on page 13, these relationships if they ended for any reason, would cause me sadness. I would be devastated if anything happened to either one of the people I mentioned, and even if I made new friends, the relationship would not be the same.

3. How much interdependence characterizes your different relationships? Interdependence in all 5 of these relationships was pretty high if I look at it as a whole. I am involved with all of these 5 people on a personal level, and therefore their sadness is my sadness, their joy, mine, and even their anger my anger. Interdependent relationships can be at times a “burden”. For example, since my relationship with my husband and father are most high as far as dependency goes, I feel those emotions that they do stronger than I do with others.

4. Compare the amounts of self-disclosure present in your relationships along the impersonal-interpersonal spectrum. As said on page 16, “There are occasions when we don’t want to be personal…” There are things I would never share with my father for example, and there are things that I do not share with my husband either. With my girlfriends however, I am willing to share a lot more, and with my friend Rasha I share the most. This is the “impersonal element” with the 5 people that I am closest too. I choose how much to share with each one according to the relationship, and sometimes I just don’t want to.

5. Distinguish the rewards in your different relationships. I think that I have intrinsic rewards with the 5 relationships that I have rather than extrinsic. I say this because extrinsic would mean that I want “tangible rewards” from those relationships. I however find great pleasure in just having those people in my life. Even though my dad has helped me out financially in the past, and I receive nice things from my husband in the form of gifts, this is not the sole reason that I have a relationship with them. Same goes with my 3 closest girlfriends. Its intrinsic because “The relationship itself is what’s important.” (pg. 15
