Introduction

Over the weeks, we have discussed the organization of the medical visit. Part of the importance of understanding how medical visits are organized is that each phase (or activity) has its own communication norms and expectations. In this week’s reading, I ask you to read Dr. Ofri’s advice on the medical visit. However, Dr. Ofri’s advice is not the only perspective on how people can best utilize medical providers. Dr. Elizabeth Yuko is a bioethicist and patient advocate who also gives advice on medical visits at this LINK.

Part 1. Compare and contrast these two experts’ advice. Specifically, compare Dr. Ofri ‘s sections titled On the Day Of (the Medical Visit and Back at Home with Dr. Yuko’s sections titled Seeing a Medical Professional and Back at Home.

Second, think about your team’s health blog topic. List 2-3 possible treatment recommendations, that is, advice a health care provider might offer for someone with the health problem your team is investigating. Think about the kinds of treatments a provider might recommend, including:

• a prescription medication, such as an antibiotic;
• a physical intervention, such as a splint or cast;
• a referral to another provider; or
• nothing at all — a recommendation for no treatment.
