Calculating the activation time of a heat detector
Question Description
(a)A carpet has been ignited by a dropped match resulting in a fire that is spreading radially outward from the point of ignition. If the convective heat release of the fire can be represented by a “FAST” t2 fire and using McCaffrey’s correlations:
i).Plot the centre-line vertical velocity of the fire up to a height of 10m after 30s, 60s and 120s.
ii).Plot the temperature at a height of 1m directly above the match as a function of time for a period of up to 3m after ignition.
iii). Plot the flame zone and intermittent flaming zone heights as a function of time for a period of up to 3m after ignition. Assume the ambient temperature to be 25oC
(b)A heat detector was located on a flat ceiling 4.5m above the fire described in (a). The heat detector operates at a temperature of 60oC and its response characteristics are such that it activated 30s after the air around it reaches the rated operating temperature.
i).at what time would a heat detector located on the ceiling directly above the match operate?
ii).at what time would a heat detector located on the ceiling at a radial distance of 6m from the match operate?
