1. Read the case summary of Gaskin v. Stumm Handel GmbH on page 18 of the textbook.

2. Read the case entitled “In re Union Carbide Corporation Gas Plant Disaster at Bhopal” on pages 14-15 (Chapter 1) of the textbook, together with the additional information on page 69 (Chapter 3) of the textbook.

Why do you think the Indian plaintiffs wanted to sue in a U.S. court? What factors led the U.S. court to dismiss this case on the basis of forum non conveniens? Had the legal requirements in India concerning the handling of hazardous chemicals been less than that required in the United States, should Union Carbide have ethically followed the higher U.S. standards?
