Any unnecessary stress in a high-pressure environment serves only to disrupt the efforts of those trying to solve the problem. The fact that the team who experienced the most degrading and unhelpful remarks performed worse than the control teams demonstrates that unnecessary stress can (and will) impact performance–negatively.

This article demonstrates the necessity for cooperation and due diligence in high stress situations, and there are many in health care, especially in the emergency room or pre-emergency room setting. Making unnecessary, demeaning comments doesn’t help anyone, especially the patient. In high stress situations, individuals sometimes need re-directed or re-focused. There are various ways of accomplishing re-direction without being insulting or demeaning.
