Hello everyone

  • From the Discussion Preparation, assess how well the news release follows the inverted triangle approach. Be sure to provide the date, title, and the company which released the news.

The article I chose is “City of Los Angeles Named Innovator of the Year for Saving Millions of Gallons of Water; Attributes Success to Dynamic Water Technologies”, Apr 29, 2020, provided by Dynamic Water Technologies. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/city-of-los-angeles-named-innovator-of-the-year-for-saving-millions-of-gallons-of-water-attributes-success-to-dynamic-water-technologies-301049603.html

I think the article follows the inverted triangle well in that it states the most profound facts in the beginning of the article and then trails down to facts and information that a person may not necessarily be interested in unless you worked directly in the utility field, or in gov’t and finance, or are a tree hugger like me. It grabs your attention with the highlights of the services accomplishments first and then goes into the details of the how and why it came about.

  • Create a best practice to determine how many facts are essential when writing a summary for an informative report.

When writing a summary for an informative report, it’s important to include the main ideas of the original piece versus highlighting every detail; to include every detail you wouldn’t be writing a summary, you’d be rewriting the original piece. I think the best practice is to determine what the most important facts are that best explain the main focus of the piece that’s being summarized, as well as taking into consideration the length of the piece because the summary should be shorter than the source piece of work. A piece of writing that’s 300 pages long is quite different than one that is 5 pages long. The number of facts to be included should be based upon the piece being interpreted and it’s length, versus having a set maximum number to use as a guideline.

  • Discuss how determining essential facts can help improve your writing for the purpose of informing an audience.

Determining essential facts can help improve your writing for the purpose of informing an audience because it encourages you to focus on the imperative points to address and not dive off into tangents, diverting the focus of the piece into a completely different direction, thus missing the original intended purpose. Determining the essential facts also shows my level of comprehension of the piece I’m analyzing or summarizing. If I don’t understand what I’m reading, I will not be able to provide an accurate interpretation for someone else. Determining the essential facts also helps to keep the summary concise and to the point so the audience’s attention is not lost.

    • In your Week 6 assignment, you will be asked to draft an informative report explaining how a familiar household appliance for an audience of fifth graders. How does the audience you are writing to inform impact your decisions regarding what in essential information?

It is imperative to consider the audience you are writing for when composing a piece, whether it’s a speech or an informative report. You don’t want to write “over their heads” so they’re unable to grasp what you’re trying to explain; you’d be completely missing the purpose of the piece. You also don’t want to talk down to the audience either, making the information so simple that it insults their intelligence. In regards to deciding what is essential to include with consideration to the audience, if the facts or data are essential in giving an accurate depiction of the topic, the facts should be included regardless of the audience age/background/status; it has to be worded and explained in a way that is relatable and clear to the audience. Essential information shouldn’t be omitted because I think the audience won’t understand.

Thank you,

Briana

Hello Professor and classmates!

Discuss how well the news release follows the inverted triangle approach.

To start, what is the inverted triangle approach? Its literally like the shape of an upside down triangle. It starts with the attention grabber. It’s the most newsworthy and the main topic that is talked about. They start with this to get any audience intrigued. It mainly gives the details of the “who, what, where, when and why.” Then the middle of the triangle where there’s the build. This has a lot of crucial info of the story. It gives the background and evidence. Then finally is the tail end of the triangle, which is pretty much any extra information given. Most people don’t read this part.

News: Just Ask Alexa: The crockpot brand continues to make slow cooking easy with the launch of Alexa-Compatible Crockpot programmer slow cooker.

Date: May 4,2020

Company – crockpot

This article is a great attention grabber because it mixes technology with cooking. Technology is taking over dramatically. Especially during this quarantine – people are definitly bored and this is a great way to advertise something new. The article lets you know that it’s voice controlled, there fore it should be fairly easy to use as well as showing pictures of the new crockpot. The article uses bullet points of its accommabilities – which is the second part of the inverted triangle where it’s supposed to give information about the product. Then it gives you additional information about crockpots in general which wraps up the last part of the inverted triangle.

I would say when writing a summary for an information report – you should have atleast three facts to support your evidence. It gives you a way to inform the audience with a short tension span. Most people don’t read much these days. If you have too much information they will mostlikely stop reading. Determinging essential facts can improve your writing because you can decipher the main points that people should have to know about in a summary.

The audience that I would have to inform is crucial because I would have to make sure that they understand. For example – there is a new toy on the market. A little boy or girl who can read sees the toy before actually reading about it. You cannot put too much informaion on it because they won’t read all of it. In my opinion you would have to write a sentence with a few words to get that kid intrigued. Its all about the wording.

Thanks,

Rachael
