Laboratory managers hold a unique role in the balance of scientific principles, requirements of the criminal justice system and the effects on the lives of individuals (American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors, 1994). Any decisions made in the laboratory must be fair and without bias. As a manager of a crime lab, the individual must have the qualifications and knowledge to supervise and manage daily operations and staff. In addition, he/she must maintain accountability for the activities in the crime lab; work with Crime Scene Response Team in the processing of crime scenes; identify developmental needs of lab staff, coach, mentor or otherwise help others to improve their knowledge, skills and abilities (American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors, 1994). Like any other profession, a manager should be trained in the areas they supervise. As a crime lab investigator, he/she should be familiar with the techniques and functions of the lab. In the event an employee needs guidance or assistance, if the manager is properly trained, he/she can assist that individual.

The forensic laboratory manager is responsible for planning and directing what happens inside the lab (Forensic Laboratory Manager). They can also develop new methods or techniques to analyze evidence and have to evaluate these new methods to make sure they are accurate in their results. The manager will also provide goals for the department which either fall under operational or performance goals (Forensic Laboratory Manager). As they are the primary liaison for law enforcement they are to know everything that is going on with a particular case for follow-ups because forensic science is a very crucial role for criminal investigations (Forensic Laboratory Manager).
Yes, the manager should be trained and have sufficient knowledge of forensic scientists. They are to know what is the best method or technique to analyze the evidence and how to know the results after completing the analysis. The department cannot have a manager who does not know how to use the equipment properly to analyze evidence. The analysis reports have to be detailed and accurate in the results of the evidence. Making recommendations to the forensic science team on best ways to analyze the evidence for more accurate results.
