Identifying Risk Factors Related to Obesity in the Elderly
Obesity reduces quality of life of an individual and poses serious health risks, such as development of coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and end-stage renal disease. The prevalence of obesity among the elderly has risen exponentially in the past decade, which provided motivation to research the topic. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that the prevalence of obesity among adults aged 60 and above was 42.8% in 2018, which reflected a 7.8% increase compared to 2010 (Hales et al., 2020; Fakhouri et al., 2012). Considering that the population of the elderly is expected to more than double up to 88.5 million by 2050, this demographic group would increase health care spending in the future (McKee & Morley, 2018). Therefore, identification of risk factors associated with obesity among the elderly can reduce the prevalence of obesity in this demographic group and optimize health care spending.
This research is aimed at providing better understanding of the risk factors related to obesity among the elderly. Notably, the disease causes an increased risk of mortality in this age group (McKee & Morley, 2018). Obtained knowledge can be applied in developing strategies and improving health care programs, which can reduce the prevalence of obesity within the elderly. Additionally, prevention strategies can help save their life and improve its quality given that they are vulnerable to many other predicaments. In this way, the research will help reduce health care funding in the future and improve the quality of life among the elderly in society.
The literature is based on the findings of the CDC and other peer-reviewed sources.
