Question Description
PROJECT: ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF A BUCK CONVERTER
Consider the buck converter circuit shown below with the following specifications:
An input voltage of 15V < Vin < 20V and an output voltage of 10V over a load range of 5W<Pout<200W. Switching frequency is fsw = 10 kHz.
- a) Design the inductor (L) and capacitor (C). The current ripple ΔiL should be below 5% ofthe average inductor current IL at the maximum load. The steady state ripple ΔVout is below0.5% of the steady-state value of the output voltage.
- b) Determine the rated values for switch, diode, and capacitor. Research and determine amanufacturer part number for your switch, diode, and capacitor. Provide data sheets foreach.
- c) Analytically determine and draw the expected current and voltage waveforms for eachcomponent in your circuit at both light and heavy load conditions with the assumption thatthe input voltage is fixed at 18V.
- d) Using PSCAD/Spice software, simulate the circuit under heavy and light load conditions.Plot the voltage and current of each component in the steady-state. Validate that the outputof your simulation matches your analytical waveforms obtained in c).
Write a report that documents your results and observations from parts a-d. Make sure all plots arewell labeled and that explanations contain solid analytical foundations.
