There are very significant differences between a for-profit organization and a non-profit organization. The main purpose of a for-profit organization is to make more money than they spend and earn a profit. The owners of a for-profit business are allowed to spend the profits however they see fit and can choose to keep all the profits for themselves. A non-profit organization does not mean that the business is not expected to yield profits, but it refers to the way in which the organization is operated (McNamara, n.d.). The purpose of a non-profit organization is to determine the need of the community and provide services and resources to help provide support to the families they serve. What makes an organization a nonprofit has to do with purpose, ownership, and public support (Fritz, 2017). In order for a business to be classified as a non-profit, it has to contain 3 major elements; a mission that focuses on specific activities and services that will be provided to a targeted audience; there should be no public ownership where no person owns shares or interest; and profits from the organization must be recycled back into the company and not kept for personal gain (Fritz, 2017). A non-profit organization is designed for the benefit of the public. Another major difference between For-profit organizations and non-profit organizations is the use of volunteers in the company. Businesses employ paid employees and staff, while non-profit organizations often have as many volunteer workers as they do staff.
